Extractions
Although dentists generally try to preserve natural teeth whenever possible, there are situations when removing a baby tooth or permanent tooth is the healthiest option. A pediatric tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged by decay, has become infected, is causing a developmental concern, or cannot be restored successfully.
Before an extraction, our pediatric dentist will explain why the tooth needs to be removed and discuss what parents can expect during and after the procedure. When a baby tooth is removed earlier than it would normally fall out, we may also recommend a space maintainer to help protect the proper position of the developing permanent teeth.
Although dentists will use every measure to prevent tooth loss, there are still some occasions when a tooth needs to be extracted. A tooth may need to be extracted if the following occurs:
• Severe decay
• Advanced gum disease
• Infection or abscess
• Orthodontic correction
• Malpositioned teeth
• Fractured teeth or roots
• Impacted teeth
A certain amount of pain and discomfort is to be expected following an extraction, but it can be minimized with painkillers and ice packs applied to the face for 15 minutes at a time. Discomfort should lessen within three days to two weeks.
If you experience prolonged or severe pain, swelling, bleeding or fever, call our office immediately.
